What & Who

Some days it can appear as if the world belongs to brutes intent on bringing it all to an end. If that’s what you see, look more closely. Moving humankind toward a better future are armies of gentle, determined folks – ethical souls who think and act. I hope you’re one such; if so, this regular column might interest you.

I believe in thought, rationality and bright idealism for all. I devour pages and seek fresh books. I sink into songs and hunt for new rock music. I extol saints building a world for children – mine and others. And I reflect on the darkness I observe around me.

This blog is me charting my progress with books, rock music, film, art and architecture. Nothing fancy, nothing of earth-shattering profundity, just one simple soul soaking up the world. Ideas will be pursued on a whim, then abandoned, to be later readdressed. An eclectic mix of themes might be explored: from genocide to King Coal, from geeks to tricksters, from Siberia to slow travel, from risk to secularism. Four posts a week is the challenge.

I’m a reader, listener and thinker, and have been all my life. I’ve worked for thirty years in the insurance and investment industries. An early technical qualification as an actuary reinforced my innate need to analyze. Learning the craft of writing has preoccupied me for the past decade and a quarter.

If this effort guides this ravenous mind, well and good. If you find something of interest, I’ll be the richer for your comments.
