Top Ten Films for October viewing

After the glories of the Melbourne International Film Festival, cinematic bleakness arrives in Melbourne. Only the first three are movies in the cinemas, the others are DVDs, mostly films that stayed in Melbourne cinemas for too short a time.

  • Mao’s Last Dancer – much hoopla but the book was so good that the movie is a must-see
  • Looking for Eric – the film that rejected the festival
  • Charlie & Boots – a Paul Hogan comedy, no longer a guarantee of laughs but let’s try it
  • The Boat that Rocked – based on the trailer, laughs at last
  • Anvil: The Story of Anvil! – heavy rock doco
  • Hunger – the Bobby Sands story
  • Elegy – ever reliable Ben Kingsley
  • Summer Hours
  • Wall-E – I hate ‘kiddy animations for adults,’ but friends recommend this
  • Doubt

WALL-E isn’t “kiddy animation for adults”. Not unless you’re so ignorant as to think animation is somehow by default for kids. WALL-E is a film that’s enjoyable by everyone of all ages.
