Another broad history of America

No surprise but histories of America are hard to write, and good ones are rare to find. The country is too sprawling and has too much impact to be readily summed up. The August 14 issue of the Times Literary Supplement gives a caning to America: Empire of Liberty (due out in a month or so) by David Reynolds, but to me the review seems partisan. Unread on my bookshelf is Reynolds’ global history and I like the idea that he has made the latest book into a ninety-minute radio series. Let me find this and skim for interest.
