Spring surprises

The Reader’s Feast catalogue for spring manages to surprise me for once with some must-get reading:

  • Noah’s Compass by Ann Tyler – all her novels are essential, even when not at her best she creates memorable characters
  • I haven’t read all of E. L. Doctorow’s novels – some are set amidst history of no interest to me – but he has created classics and Homer and Langley, set in the first half of the twentieth century, attracts me
