How fascinating. Civil disobedience against coal plants is on the rise, according to Mark Engler’s superb Salon article ‘ How to kill a coal plant.’ The article focuses on the 2007 action of the Kingsnorth Six (which, according to Engler, contributed to the UK decision to shift away from coal) but then suggests mass marches and other actions are increasing. Apparently the December Copenhagen climate conference is planned to involve a major anti-coal protest, and other similar, coordinated protests in other parts of the world.
Burning coal is immoral, it’s as simple as that. Weaning ourselves off burning coal will cost us something; most moral decisions do. Whether or not mining coal, for someone to buy and burn, is immoral isn’t something I’ve made my mind up on yet.
