Film festival: Guitar gods and a Danish WWII thriller

Electric guitars, the subject of the first film, had not been invented in 1944, the year of the second:

  • It Might Get Loud, made by Davis Guggenheim, features three generations of lauded guitarists: Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White. They meet in a barn to discuss and play the instrument of choice for me and millions of others, the electric guitar. Excellent direction weaves the story in and out of the three lives, present and past. I inhaled the intoxication of inspiration. 4 stars.
  • Flame & Citron are the codenames of two Dutch resistance fighters hunting informers as the war winds down in late 1944. This revenge thriller is directed by Ole Christian Madsen and ratchets up tension admirably, as motives and affliliations become murky. Great music. I wanted a different ending but this is based on a true story, so I guess I live with it. 3 stars.

Electric guitars were invented in the early thirties, and both Les Paul and Fender had made them by 1944. I know it seems weird to think of a pre-war electric instrument, but our ancestors were sometimes cleverer (and had more modern tastes) than you might imagine.

    Lyle,
Thanks and of course you’re right and of course I knew it. The old bluesmen and all that. In fact Jack White plays some old blues (a vinyl record, how nostalgic!) in It Might Get Loud.
