Trip to Basement Discs

Come to Melbourne and wander through crowded Block Place, tucked away off Little Collins Street, to a door leading downstairs into the cavernous, welcoming record store (I still call it that) Basement Discs. Quality music within unfashionable categories, the finest of advice, regular free lunchtime live acts, an excellent New Releases section, and a palpable love of music . . . surely this is heaven.

The best time to visit Basement Discs is after a boozy lunch. Here’s what I found today:

  • Eric Bogle’s The Dreamer – apparently he’s saying it’s his last album!
  • Patrick Wolf’s The Bachelor
  • Untitled #23by The Church – just as I’m processing Kilbey’s solo album, this one almost sneaks past me
