Top Ten books for June reading

No science fiction this month and only two literary novels, but some bumper crime novels and fascinating nonfiction books:

  • Paul Veyne’s Seneca: The Life of a Stoic – more from the Destination category of Undistraction
  • Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones – no, I couldn’t make myself start this in May, but June is the go
  • The Renegades by T. Jefferson Parker – by one of my faves, this just arrived from America in hardback
  • Michael S. Gazzaniga’s Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique
  • The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery – sounds refined, different and fascinating
  • Eric Maisel’s The Atheist’s Way: Living Well Without Gods – I’ve been waiting for this book’s publication for over a year
  • The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith – if this thriller, set in post-Stalin Russia, is as good as his first, it will consume a night of reading
  • Inside the Gas Chambers by Shlomo Venezia
  • Josh Bazell’s Beat the Reaper
  • Mark Vernon’s Wellbeing – some reflective philosophy about happiness and the like
