I didn’t spot it in the local paper but via a Climate Progress post: Australian scientists get desperate and blunt. As announced on Crikey.com, six scientists, including three who are part of IPCC, have written to all the owners of coal-fired plants in this country, in essence challenging them to declare there will be no more coal plants unless they’re zero emission from day one. They spell out the gravity of the utilities’ responsibilities and close with this message:
The unfortunate reality is that genuine action on climate change will require that existing coal-fired power stations cease to operate in the near future. We feel it is vital that you understand this and we are happy to work with you and with governments to begin planning for this transition immediately.
