How much variety can rock ears bear?

Our rock music club met this week and what a chaotic mixture of music on display! Of the eleven offerings, I made a note to get hold of The Hazards of Love by The Decembrists, an outpouring of rock/folk songs, and the driving Kingdom of Rust by The Doves. I took along Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid. Other albums were:

  • The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack – great soundtrack in the movie theatre, a bomb on the stereo
  • Jason Mraz’s We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things has songs I’ve heard but is too Jack Johnson for me
  • Cardinology by Ryan Adams & The Cardinals – another heartfelt effort
  • Shane Nicholson’s Familiar Ghosts – earnest Australian country blues
  • American Hearts by A. A. Bondy – such a great name, the solo songs sounded fine but low-key
  • The Firekites’ self-titled album sounded interesting
  • The Beautiful World by Eliza Gilkyson, who had played at the recent Port Fairy Folk Festival
  • We even heard Music Inspired by the Game – The Witcher
