Why blog?

Blogging chews up time I shouldn’t spare. Why do it then? My What & Who page provides the main rationale but doesn’t capture the frailty of this enterprise. The real answer to the question posed is that I’m unclear on why I’ve begun blogging, but that this lack of clarity is the reason itself. To express my rationale a different way:

  • I’m passionate about books, music (of the rock variety), film, and other culture (to greater or lesser degrees, of interest to me in itself), and about major ideas of our times.
  • I’m active, rather than passive, in pursuit of these passions. Voracious is an apt descriptor.
  • How I spend my time is of paramount importance. I can’t possibly read every book of interest or listen to every beguiling song. So I spend quite some time – very enjoyable time – tracking down stuff I might want to pursue, deciding whether or not to go ahead with it, and then analyzing my responses.
  • A word describes the result: chaos. This blog, then, is partly me keeping track of the chaos.
  • And, given my inherent belief that thought makes a better person, this blog also encapsulates a desire to become wiser and more humane.

I suspect I’ll keep coming back to this question again and again.
